Another year, another Guided By Voices album. This has been the case for a decade or so. It has almost become a law of nature. But what also had become a law, proved wrong the last two times around: Guided By Voices records weren’t always little masterpiece celebrations of melody and good compositions. The band with the greatest rock band name of all time are back at Matador after a short-lived cooperation with TVT Records. This umpteenth GBV record sees Bob Pollard getting back to the small, short, melodic adventures at which his band is best. The melody-in-a-minute-songs (Zap) get alternated with big-chorus-songs (Christian Animation Torch Carriers), songs that go against the grain (Love 1), as well as acoustic, Beatlesque beauties (Factory Of Raw Essentials). It kind of all comes together again for Guided By Voices on Universal Truths and Cycles. This is a band that don't have to prove anything anymore: Just make another album packed with addictive melodies. And they did. "For Christ’s sake, Charlie, send them your love," Pollard proclaims in the lofi intro to Skin Parade. He surely sends us his. Being around for so long and still writing songs like these: That’s worth taking a bow for. True, you don’t have to expect real changes or new experimental directions; it’s just those melodies… teasingly short. Only the Jane’s Addiction-like The Ids Are Alright comes as a surprise. "Ooh, God bless you," Bob Pollard sings on the closing song, Father Sgt. Christmas Card. He sure is blessed with a melodic feel and the gift of making up strange lyrics and titles. An addictive record again from the lofi Beatles. A must-have for old adepts and a great intro for beginners.
