And then it is time to say: enough already. Who really needs another remix collection which presents all the usual suspects: that cozy mafia of 4 Hero, Zero 7, Cinematic Orchestra, and Lamb, this time remixed by Hefner? Another collection of middle-of-the-road, faux-jazz, fake funk that somehow has come to signify good taste. We should curse the day 4 Hero decided to make "real" music, for I blame them above all for this dead-end we have reached. Hefner meanwhile, actually do a nice job with these remixes. That's what is irritating about this music: It is so pleasant and nice that you can hate it while actually liking it as background music.
In this sticky bath of niceness one occasionally finds something that breaks the opiate flow of safe hip-hop breaks and light jazz, as is the case with their remix of Shashkin by Omar Faruk Tekbilek, where the blazing Arabian instruments radically break with the surrounding sound palate. Meanwhile, Hefner's own Everyday is an almost perfect pastiche of a Miami Vice ballad, the delectable synth melody flashing slow motion scenes of a neon-drenched Don Johnson feeling melancholic. Not quite as good but still pleasant is the reworking of Fink's Ever Since I Was Kid, where a monologue on record-buying as an addiction changes into a relaxed track one can imagine The Doors, circa L.A. Woman, playing while waiting for Morrison to turn up. Not entirely fair perhaps, but compare this slim volume of eight remixes with the recent Herbert remix extravaganza and realize how these remix projects should be anthologized: overflowing with class, wit, and quality.
