Everything is possible in the world of free improvisation. Every note, every
sound, every tone. And every form of line-up. In the case of Iskra 1903, the
line-up is combined of a trombone player, a violin & electronics man, and
a double bass player. Can't get much, 'em, weirder than this. Paul Rutherford
(trombone), Philipp Wachsmann (violin) and Barry Guy (double bass) are an
improv trio that existed from 1977 and 1995, but only one recording from
a Canadian concert in 1992 was ever released. Now this concert from
Frankfurt in 1991 is released through the channels of the Emanem label,
we're all lucky they decided to do that.
A group improvisation of 33 minutes called Frankfurter Memories is the
starting point of this journey. The three instruments combined create a
strange and alienating atmosphere, the focal point being the intrusive sound of
the trombone. The sound is low and penetrating and leaves lasting scars on
your subconcious if played without preparation. In other words: This
recording is not a starting point if you want to introduce yourself to free
improvisation. But if you're already used to extreme stuff in any kind of
music, you might give it a try, because then maybe you'll be able to find
the many hidden layers of beauty.
The Iskra 1903 members also performed solo that evening, and those three efforts are put to
tape as well. Again, we're lucky they did, because these musicians stand out
on their own as well. Wachsmann is the most original, because he treats his
violin with some electronics and thus provides a totally different
performance than the others, with the emphasis on atmosphere rather than
playing weird notes. Furthermore, it's amazing that Rutherford is able to
create such fragile notes out of such a huge brass instrument as the trombone,
and that Guy presents his double bass as an extremely versatile instrument that
gets used for much more than only laying down a backbone. Stunning album!
