Listening to instrumental versions of existing songs for a long time isn't always possible. Whether or not the music is well-performed or not, you start to miss the voice, and after listening to it for a while you'll get the original version and enjoy it even more. Jason Falkner does it with The Beatles on 'Bedtime With The Beatles'. He chose twelve songs from the huge collection and turned them into instrumental tunes, as if they were meant to be for a soundtrack for a big motion picture. Although the pace of the original versions varies, Falkner chose to take everything easy; it isn't a strange bit of advice for him to tell the listeners to play it before they go to sleep. Still, the decision to leave out the vocals has a big impact. There aren't many singers who can reach such high tones like Falkner does on the song 'Holiday' from his (by the way very underrated) last album 'Can You Still Feel'. It would have been nice to hear him sing along, because his choice of the songs was the right one: not the widely-covered classics like 'Yesterday', 'Help!', and 'Let It Be', but the songs that still add something extra to the Beatles collection, for instance 'Across The Universe', 'Michelle', 'Here, There And Everywhere', and 'The Long And Winding Road'. There is also nothing wrong with the way they are performed: If you want to make instrumental versions of Beatles songs, please do it this way. But I'd rather stay awake with Jason Falkner singing along than fall asleep without it. So, it's a nice album to put on when your parents come and visit, but you'll surely turn it off again, because there is a big chance your father will start taking care of the vocals.
