Jeff Mills is mostly known for his pounding, merciless and dark techno. That kind of work was already compiled on previous cd's. Now there's 'Lifelike', a compilation of the "compositions from the Axis Records, Purpose Maker and Tomorrow catalogue that bare the most character". Don't expect tracks like 'Wrath of the Punisher' or 'Step to Enchantement', expect tracks like 'Yantra' (from the infamous Axis 4), 'Condor to Mallorca' (Waveform Transmissions 3) and 'Minnia' (from X-103: Atlantis, still one of the best techno-albums ever produced). Not that this compilation contains only warm, wavy and dreamy tracks, there's also room for thrilling, dark tracks where the suspense keeps mounting and mounting. Millsfans may wonder why they should buy this album, but a quick listen to one of the four exclusive new tracks will convince them this cd is a must ('Global Factor' is one of the best things Mills ever put out). Another reason is the fact that this compilation features three tracks from the 'From the 21st' album. That album, with some of Mills' best work to date, was only released in Japan, as a sort of individual protest against the globalization of techno. People who're interested in the 'man behind the musician' can get their kicks in the booklet, that contains extracts from conversations between Mills and psychologists.
