Jeff Scott Soto is probably one of the most productive artists in the rock business. But then again, his career DID have quite an early start. Jeff started singing in cover bands during his grade and high school years, which gave him the necessary experience to survive an audition at the tender age of 18 with master-guitarist Yngwie Malmsteen (who isn't exactly known for his cheery personality).
Soto performed on Malmsteen's first two albums and then moved on to a huge number of other bands and projects, such as Takara, Talisman and Axel Rudi Pell as well as making appearances as background singer on various major releases throughout the 80's and 90's.
After some sidesteps, such as the soundtracks for the movies Rock Star and Queen Of The Damned and even a disco band, Soto is returning to his roots with Prism. This album is the follow-up to his first solo-album Love Parade from 1994.
During the eleven tracks on Prism, Jeff Scott Soto treats us to what has become his specialty: melodic, catchy hard rock songs garnished with his fabulous soulful voice. Among the highlights of this album are little masterpieces like 'How Long' and 'Eyes Of Love'. And of course 'I Want To Take You Higher', a duet with none other than Glenn Hughes!
Be warned that Prism also contains a lot of (semi) ballads (some would even say "too many"), but if you can appreciate more than ultra-fast black and thrash metal only, that shouldn't be a problem.
The Prism album will be followed by a Best Of world tour in 2003, covering the many facets of Jeff Scott Soto's long and highly productive career. I for one can hardly wait to be a witness to a visit of this hardrock legend!
