In 1998 Jerry Cantrell, the sonic architect of Alice In Chains, locked himself in his house for three to four months, sent out for food, went out of his mind, and wrote about 25 songs. "It was a hell-of-an-experience. The album is an overview of birth to now. Thats all. Boggy Depot [Cantrell's solo debut] is like kindergarten compared to this. The sonic difference is comparable to the difference between Facelift and Dirt [two AIC albums], which was a tremendous leap," Cantrell recalls.
The first part of Cantrell's trip — 14 songs, 72 minutes — is now released; the second part will see the light of day by 2003. Anger Rising, one of the more melodic songs (and with its riffs, also one of the ultra-rock songs of the album), will be the first single. Many of the other songs are, however, bluesier. But all are introspective, describing Cantrell's problems: from Mother Spinning In Her Grave, pointing at his drug addiction, to She Was My Girl, which addresses his romantic troubles. Solitude, a song that easily could have fit on AIC record Sap, is a semi-acoustic somnolent, an almost-lovely (and never wry or sarcastic, like many of his songs) epos.
These and other songs make up the fine album that Degradation Trip is: a dark, dangerous, beautiful tour de force. With that said, this record is the expected growth from Boggy Depot onwards. In a sense, Degradation Trip is somewhere between Dirt and Sap, between the heavy rock of AIC and the more introspective, sensitive side of that band. Cantrell himself no longer dislikes AIC references, as he did in his Boggy Depot period. Back then, Cantrell says he didn't associate himself with AIC: "I was stepping away from the band, so there was a consciousness of not sounding like Alice." Now that fear is replaced, and we can once again witness Cantrell's wonderful, but sometimes frightening, chimeras of lyrically mournful and mental exorcism.
