We know John Thomas from his work on Logistic, one of France's premier-league techno outfits and from his cooperations with techno legends Technasia on their recent offshoot Sino. But those who expected the man's long-play debut to be crammed with twelve or so monotone peak-time techno slabs will be in for a very big surprise. For, as you may already have guessed considering the title, Thomas has gone digging and delving in his black music collection. The only remnant from his earlier work still omnipresent on this album is the minimalism. Gone are the clattering snares, the blasting beats, the climaxing synth stabs, and the relentless robotic rhythms. Gone also are the protracted, drawn-out repetitive cycles of nowadays techno. They are replaced by short downbeat excursions, funky guitar licks, calm atmospheres, trendy clicks and glitches and, most of all, by a distinct relaxed and warm approach. Of course, the Detroit techno template with its low-key string arrangements and electronic magic is never too far off, but the man relishes in hip-hop, jazz, disco, and soul like he was born to do it. 'Blackstage' is presented by the distributor as "an album without limitations", and for once that is exactly the truth. If only more contemporary techno producers took this road, then we - at last! - could get rid of the ugly metallic tribalism that too often is shamelessly sold today under the guise of techno. For those who like a discovery.
