Lars Frederiksen plays the guitar in Rancid. All original songs were co-written by Frederiksen and Rancid frontman Tim Armstrong, who also produced. "So the album probably sounds a lot like Rancid?" I wouldn't know, because I have to admit I don't know Rancid very well. What I do know is that the album is filled with old-school punk, filling the entire spectrum between The New York Dolls ('6 Foot 5') and Motorhead (a cover of the Motown classic 'Leavin' Here' that sounds exactly like the British band's). Which means it rocks a lot harder than most modern punk albums. It rocks a lot harder than most modern albums in general. Bastards Big Jay on bass and Scott Abels on drums lay down a mean midtempo groove for Frederiksen to check what sounds rawer and dirtier: his voice or his guitar. I'd say it's a draw. The Unknown Bastard finally provides the finishing touch with the obligatory shout-along background vocals. Certainly not bad for a side project that was written, recorded and mixed in five days. And this is not only for punks; those who have the first two Hellacopters albums or know the lyrics to 'Ace Of Spades' might check this one out as well.
