Lawn, a new band from the very north of Holland, present us their first album, called 'Lawn-Dro-Mat'. It has been a while since they played in the finals of the biggest music prize for unsigned bands in Holland, but they used that time to try to make a good record. A good initiative indeed, because they succeeded. While in the past, they seemed condemned to being put in the space/stoner-rock corner, over the last few years they slowly changed their direction into more post-rock-orientated territory. A good step, because the strongest aspect of the Lawn sound is the amazing feel for melodies the songwriters have. Therefore, 'Lawn-Dro-Mat' is an album with addictive qualities: They know exactly how to use certain perfectly-fitting chord structures, they take the time to let those ideas develop, and the song dynamics are well thought out. The first three songs really stand out: 'Marshmellow' is a great, almost instrumental, space-rock song in 35007-style, 'Roadkill' and 'June' are fantastic rock songs with superb melodies, which are taken to Mogwai-like climaxes. Also the, again almost instrumental, closing track 'Big Exit' (which actually sounds very small and intimate) has beautiful repetitive post-rock patterns. It is in that area that Lawn have the biggest possibilities: repetitive, drony, yet melodic, and melancholic. And instrumental, because the thin voices of the two singing van 't Veer brothers are a tad bit too insecure to convince to the fullest. And while we're in the critical mood, the drumming lacks some power as well: It can't compare with the big guitar walls, which are produced by Pidah, famous for his work with almost every Dutch guitar band. But overall 'Lawn-Dro-Mat' is a very promising debut album that deserves much more than the 40 minutes it got.
