Flashback: sitting in your room at university singing along to "Rattlesnakes". Along with the Smiths and Prefab Sprout, Lloyd Cole & The Commotions hit that literate and jangly soul of yours. That was the eighties, you just liked to mope and dress in black. Lloyd Cole lost the Commotions along the way but he held on to that moodiness. He actually went a step further by enlisting a backing band called the Negatives. How much darker can you be? Even though it's no "Rattlesnakes", he does manage with the help of Jill Sobule and ex-Lou Reed sidekick Robert Quine to make a record full of heart-ache expressed through rich melodies, effective yet understated instrumentation and witty word-use. Lloyd Cole managed to deliver a wonderful record. Don't be the legion that passes this record by. You could do worse, you could silently wallow in your own distress.
