Iceland has furtile ground, see Björk and Sigur Ros. Acts that share a certain desolateness and melancholy. Múm, also from Iceland, has the same features. Bjšrk combined it with pop, Sigur Ros with ambient and postrock, and Múm combines it with electronica. Not really a danceable form of electronica, but don't hold that against them. What they provide are beautiful and pretty melodies (the album is filled with these), embedded in Boards of Canada atmospheres and Autechre beats without the noise. And then they top it with instruments like accordions, melodica, trumpet and glockenspiel, or sporadically some vocals singing along with the main melodies. Quite a stunning combination, which is most obvious in the instantly appealing "Awake on a train", one of the best songs I've heard in ages. This record never sounds too experimental for the masses, or too easy for the avantgarde lovers. Múm carefully rides that fine line between pop and avantgarde electronica, and they succeed in blending those together in a very natural way. IDM for the masses? Maybe, but when it is done on such level as displayed right here, it makes no difference whatsoever what genre you want to call this.
