Outside, the elements are raging. Howling winds tangle with pouring sheets of rain, vying to make their indelible marks on fragile trees, power lines, and the occasional city street gutter, nearing full capacity. Gloomy grey skies loom overhead, and Mother Sun fails to beam her beatific smile over us. And then all of a sudden, through a hazy patch, Neil Halstead emerges. Halstead is the former singer of Slowdive and the current singer of Mojave 3, and he's come with nine blissful gems to comfort us and to provide us with that much-needed warm solace in the midst of our wintry malaise. 'Sleeping On Roads' is the title he has chosen to give this package of songs, and you could say that it's a road album of sorts, what with several tracks dedicated to the open road and the travels thereon. With an average length of over five minutes, Halstead's songs take their time, meandering down virtual hills and climbing up valleys, often taking respite from the storm behind a dark crag hidden around a misty corner. The songs are long, but never boring, never wearing out their anticipated welcome. 'Driving With Bert' - dedicated to folk guitar legend Bert Jansch - is surely one of the most beautiful things your ears will rest upon all year, while the title track is pure Nick Drake (as is much of the album). But don't let cheap journalistic comparisons turn you away from 'Sleeping On Roads'; don't let them soil your listening experience. Give this record a chance to grow. Play it five or six times. Absorb the subtle melodies. Less Americana than pure English folk reverie, this is the new Anglicana: country lanes, misty-eyed troubadours, and music that acts as soothing balm for your ragged soul.
