Personally I'm not that fond of post-grunge bands like Creed, Bush and Silverchair. They only make me want to listen to their ancestors. Nickelback also is a post-grunge band, but the foursome from Vancouver, Canada, grabbed my attention in a more positive way. Starting in 1996 the band, consisting of two brothers, released their first full-length CD 'Curb' through their own label. With this CD they gained popularity within the borders of Canada. In January 1999 Nickelback already released 'The State' independently in their home country. The single 'Leader Of Men' got up the top-twenty of the rock charts single-handedly and without any promotion from a record company. Nickelback immediately was the next big thing and the labels came swarming around the band. They eventually released 'The State' again through Roadrunner records and 'Leader Of men' became the biggest selling single for Roadrunner in America. Now Nickelback gets airplay in Europe as well. So this is why I am reviewing an album that has been recorded over two years ago. And this popularity isn't something completely strange. The band has the easily to consume post-grunge sound known from acts like Creed, Everclear and 3 Doors Down and combine this with a Led Zeppelin kind of feel. It's all not very original, but hey...it sells. The band is currently in the studio recording the follow up. And this should be a comfortable situation for a band that still sells with a CD that is two years old.
