This is Ohm from Denton, Texas. Don't expect Twang! music, things are getting slightly more difficult here. They started of in the mid-90s as an improvisational ensemble called Frankie Teardrop, inviting every musician they knew to come and play, but later on they evolved into a more constructed band. They recorded this record as a four-piece, but the clarinetplayer left for reasons unknown to me. I hope it doesn't effect future recordings too much, since he had quite a big role in the music. But back to this record, Ohm succeeds in creating some really strange music. All instrumental, no guitars, long songs. I said songs? No 'real' songs here, the music obviously comes forth out of improvisational sessions. The overall sound is somewhat retro, but don't think Black Crowes retro, more like Faust or early King Crimson retro. And that is not a bad thing, since that music hasn't been made for years. But the King Crimson comparison is totally insufficient: the long clarinet and saxophone parts bring Sun Ra to surface more than once, and the electronics and keyboards bring back memories from Aphex Twin's 'Selected Ambient Works II'. Are you still here? No, indeed not the easiest music, in fact if you call it plain weird no one would or could argue with you. But this music sounds really fascinating, drones clearly combine very well with free-jazz clarinetsolos and parts that seem out of place at first blend in just perfectly when you're more used to the complex soundstructures. And although listening to the whole 74 minutes can be a bit overwhelming, it has to be said that Ohm succeeded in making an album that really is from Mars. Or beyond. Difficult stuff.
