The members of Penniless grew up in a small town on the west coast of Finland. They released three albums as 'Penniless People Of Bulgaria', but dropped most of the name after being fed up with more or less silly questions and hostile messages. Now 'Anola', the fifth full album of Penniless, is there. The concept has hardly changed since their first self-released album 'Cake' in 1993: catchy guitar rock and alternative power pop. Since 1996, Penniless have been touring outside of Scandinavia and made it to the Roskilde Festival in 1997. With 'Anola', Penniless are trying to storm the world. Will they succeed? Answer 1: 'Anola' by Penniless is one of the worst ripoffs I have heard since the Stone Temple Pilots released their first record. The songs are hardly ever original. They try to be alternative, but the guitars are just hiding the easy pop record beneath 'Anola'. This has been done before so many times, we shouldn't even review records like this. Answer 2: 'Anola' by Penniless is one of the best records of 2001. With wonderful pop melodies, rocking guitars, and a lot of humour, Penniless will storm the world. 'Black Crowes', 'Never Forget You', and 'Imbecile' are simply three of the best songs released this year. Besides, 'Anola' has no lows. OK, they sound a little like the Stone Temple Pilots, Weezer, Frank Black, Nada Surf, Bob Mould, Kent, Soulwax, Jane's Addiction, Our Lady Peace, The Smashing Pumpkins' more catchy work, and a couple of dozen other bands. But they definitively have their own sound. This record is made for alternative radio and college radio stations. I don't know how, but these guys know how to blend 20 years of alternative rock into a mix that both features great melodies and advanced rock.
