Nostalgia gets such a bad rap. Selective memory and reissues enable us to forget how dreary the Eighties actually were. So why not sample from the good memories and vinyl records and come up with something new? Under the moniker Playgroup, label-owner, remixer, and graphic designer Trevor Jackson releases a dance record that's deeper than the groove on your Casablanca records and dirtier than The Slits' mud. But where nostalgia can be a carbon copy of the past - think The Strokes and Puff Daddy - Trevor Jackson shuffles the samples and influences and comes up with something fresh and exciting. The ingredients? From disco, funk, new wave to hip hop, it is clear that Playgroup wants to see you dance. Or even mellow out on the dubby 'Surface To Air'. But then there's punk and rock - as always cerebral. On 'Bring It On', it comes together with the Slits samples and ex-Bikini Kill and Le Tigre's Kathleen Hanna vocals - the past and present perfectly matched in gender (and) politics. The sample usage and collaborators give away that Trevor Jackson was born and raised on British music. Apart from the Slits samples, Orange Juice's Edwyn Collins and Aztec Camera's Roddy Frame appear as well. Although the cover depicts a dark image lightened up with multi-coloured dayglo lines, this is clearly a pop record. Sexy, fun, and instantly accessible.
