Ted Horowitz is the son of a candy storeowner. Horowitz is better known as Popa Chubby, the blues butcher from New York. This heavyweight in blues music is probably one of those driven musicians who spend most of the time on stage, rather than recording records in a studio. However. Mr. Horowitz ain’t a lazy man when it comes to making albums, because somewhere in between the never-ending world tours and the recording of his own albums, Popa Chubby has found time to record an album with his wife and a couple of good friends. The Black Coffee Blues Band is the name of this part-time bluesband. Popa Chubby chooses a pure, electric and often noisy direction for his blues covers, especially on these recordings. Motorcycle Mama is taken from Neil Young’s Comes A Time and is probably one of Young’s worst songs, but that doesn’t keep Popa Chubby from turning this into a steaming sound factory. Chubby’s interpretation of the classic Cocaine Blues seems to work very well too, but things are getting really dangerous when his lovely wife reaches for the microphone. See See Rider is a good example of a little too much spontaneity, but this also shows why Popa Chubby feels more at home on a stage.
