This well-produced record is a little too retro for me and leaves me with mixed feelings, but I'm sure that devoted fans of old-fashioned rockabilly will not mind the traditional Fifties feel on Rosie Flores' latest and fifth studio album. 'The Speed Of Sound' is actually an innocent and varied homage to the happy days of rock'n'roll: the good old days, when people watched sitcoms and worried parents thought that Elvis Presley was the devil in disguise. Well, Rosie Flores takes you back to the early Fifties. 'The Speed Of Sound' starts off rather shamelessly with a somewhat childish melody on 'Rock-A-Bye Boogie', which is an uncomfortable cover of a b-side of the Davis Sisters' number one hit from 1953. Things get better along the way to the final track: a nicely-done interpretation of Johnny Cash's famous 'Country Boy'. Still, Rosie doesn't add anything new and doesn't come up with mind-blowing hooks and melodies, but nevertheless 'The Speed Of Sound' is most likely meant to be a harmless, refreshing cover album, which easily jumps from western swing on 'Somebody's Someone' to the romantic rockabilly of Buck Owens on 'Hot Dog' and straight back to a couple of traditional, sweet country songs for the sentimental souls. It didn't immediately blow me away, but think of this record as easy listening, something you would like to hear as background music in a Chinese restaurant, sitcom, or a half-empty bar: sweet and innocent, with memories of the past.
