To boldly go where no one has gone before. Matthew Curry, aka Safety Scissors, must have been thinking something like that when he went into the studio to record his first full-length album. The result is a strange and unique sound, a mixture of electronica and pop music with some great tongue-in-cheek humour to top it off. Safety Scissors uses complex rhythmic structures, combined with some nice electronica, a few acoustic instruments, pop-like melodies, and on several tracks Safety Scissors even adds his non-existing singing talents to the music. The result is also something that demands not to be taken too seriously, although there's some really intimate and personal music to be found on 'Water Parts'. Just listen to the beautiful 'Stormy Weather', the melancholic 'Esperanto', or the crazy-but-pop-like '(water)phone'. Tracks like '7 glasses a day/7 days a week' or 'Sailor Stripes' would've sounded perfect on the German imprint Force Tracks, on which Safety Scissors already released two 12"s. I can't say that all of the tracks are as good as that, but overall this album is a great listening experience that proves this is a very interesting and exciting time for electronic music. Watch this space for our forthcoming interview with Safety Scissors!
