I've read many things about this band (mostly very positive), before I heard a single note myself. They were compared with 'big' names like Godspeed You Black Emperor!, Mogwai and Radiohead, and I have to admit that my expectations became higher an higher, especially since Radiohead invited them to become their supportact on their European tour. Would they live up to my expectations? Yes and no. Yes because the music is great and beautiful, no because they're not as experimental or original as I thought they would be. Their sound is not easy to describe. Very melancholic, long songs (10 minutes is no exception), the extremely high vocals from the singer (singing mostly in Icelandic and sounding a bit like Liz Frazer from the Cocteau Twins) and the 'huge' arrangements with loud violins and orchestral parts are things that make the sound so characteristic. But the songs themselves, the chordstructures are more or less pretty standard for popmusic. The orchestration is sometimes like GYBE! but the sound and melodies are never as dark. What also comes to mind are The Beatles on Revolver and Sgt.Pepper (the use of horns and strings). Overall Sigur R—s is very impressive and huge sounding, less dark than GYBE!, more psychedelic than Radiohead. Their greatest power is their ability to arrange standard little chordstructures into impressive buildings of music.
