New week, new hype. At least in the UK. Preferably pertaining to a group of working class kids from some industrial city, and who look like they haven't eaten a vegetable in years. But if the local scene can't deliver, foreign product is fine, as well. This time all eyes are on Sweatmaster, the new Scandinavian garage sensation. And woken up by their extremely late discovery of the Hives and their complete overlooking of bands such as the Flaming Sideburns and the Chronics, this time the Britons licensed the latest Bad Afro signing. Quality (almost) guaranteed.
And with this Finnish trio, they indeed got a winner. Sweatmaster is at least as good as fellow countrymen + Argentinan the Flaming Sideburns. The catchy title track of the EP, with its handclaps and one-note piano playing, already is good, but doesn't create a distinction from the competition. But then Hold It! explodes with a drum beat harder and drier than Jeff Mills programs them. Bass and guitar do little more than provide accents, and the first words of the singer are a request, shouted for the whole world to hear: "Hold it in your hand, a little stronger / For love / Hold it in your mouth, a little longer / For love."
And when you think Sweatmaster has reached its climax with that, the souped-up, stripped-down Sonics stomp takes it even further in Wanna See It Done. "All girls in the front row, woooooooooh, I wanna, wanna . . . " Danko Jones surrenders and becomes a kindergarten teacher, and the Hives decide it is better to finish their economics studies. And all that before closer Too Much Love, which is in the same league as Hold It! and Wanna See It Done.
The twelve-track full length (although, with a band like this, "full length" is relative: It lasts under half an hour) Sharp Cut will come out on Bad Afro, early November. John Peel and Steve Lamacq love this EP, and it was Single Of The Week on XFM, but that's just UK hype. But trust me when I write that if the four tracks on this EP are on the upcoming album, that's enough to make it qualify for my Top Five of 2002.
