Basically bought their new CD "Pedals" based on the fact that Jim O'Rourke produced the record. Why? O'Rourke has produced my favourite record of the year, namely Smog's "Knock Knock". If you haven't got that one yet, run out and buy that one first. Then come back and continue reading this review. Although it doesn't knock (*ahum*) "Knock Knock" from the first spot, "Pedals" is a very sweet poprecord. The Aluminum Group is the project of two guys named Navin. Brothers who probably want to live in the Swinging Sixties, rather than celebrate the millenium. The influences are very clear from the start of the record: from Burt Bacharach to the Carpenters, you can picture the band dressed in a tuxedo playing in a smoky club where only martinis are served. The vocals are very effective, bringing to mind those suave crooners of the same era.
Contemporary comparisons would be Belle And Sebastian and Magnetic Fields. But where those two bands, especially Belle And Sebastian, sound unfinished to these ears of mine, the Navin brothers clearly worked a lot on these songs. Not only have they used strings and horns but also twisted humour (check out Paperback).
The only drawback I can come up with is that for some this might sound too mellow, too soft. Indeed there's not one harsh sound to be found in the world of the Navins. So if you don't like cotton, do not step in the time machine. And certainly don't press for PEDALS.
