The Bellrays are a sonic boxing ring. On one corner, we have ony Fate, master of the psychedelic rock guitar. In the other corner we have Lisa Kekaula, the Vocal Tornado. Maybe she learned to sing in the church choir, but it seems more likely she WAS the church choir. The resulting carnage is "Maximum Rock & Soul." Or sometimes chaos. Fate's busy style is echoed by the rhythm section of Bob Vennum (bass) and Ray Chin (drums), and when they wander off into trippy, freak-out territory, all Kekaula can do is try to blow their house of feedback and distortion down. Add to that: The Bellrays produce their own records, low-budget-style, and you've got a recipe for a whole lotta noise.
But just as often, everything clicks and you got a great band that is almost unsurpassed in intensity. And this is where the Poptones label comes in. The label selected the best tracks for the Meet The Bellrays compilation, which is the first official European release for the band. The combination of a good selection from the unstable Bellrays oeuvre and an official release makes Meet The Bellrays a completely different puppy from the cash-in, Your New Favourite Band Hives' compilation from the same label.
Even better would be if Poptones provided some cash for a producer for the next album. Not only to avoid those everything-louder-than-everything-else pissing contests, but also to avoid ridiculous, high noise levels such as in Zero PM, where, in the soulful intro, white noise is by far the loudest instrument.
