Michael Homyk is a Midwestern US artist who has released this six-song EP as a home demo under the name The Crayon Theatrical, and its bent is a naive (in the "style" sense of the word, not a pejorative sense), psychedelic, trippy milieu.
Unlike skilful practitioners like Belle And Sebastian, Nick Drake, and Mazzy Star, this effort sadly lacks the charm, wit, and skilful use of effects. The voice is serviceable, but too pedestrian, the arrangements middle-of-the-road, and the chord progressions mundane.
It's very well recorded, but it's this clean recording that obscures the psychedelic intent of the music. There's no "blurring of the frame" that marks the best efforts in this genre. Everything is very concrete, and lines like "basking in a sea of grass" don't magically turn this into a mind-blowing experience when it's accompanied by a hackneyed arrangement.
Mr. Homyk needs to stop applying sensible studio techniques for clean recording and muddy the waters a bit. Applying wah wah and fuzz to his guitar doesn't qualify; he also needs to look at his voice and try to make it more impressionistic if he wants to be successful in this style. Dare I say that he really sounds like he'd be better mining another style of rock music?
He has a lot of promise as a musician, but this effort is a miscalculation in my view. This is almost lounge music for acid lovers. Of course, maybe that's next year's big trend, and I'm the one who's out of step.
