I was damn curious about this album by The Eternals, because I never really heard their music. The only thing I knew about them was the fact that they're on Washington DC-based DeSoto Records. I totally dig the bands on their roster, like Burning Airlines and The Dismemberment Plan, so I figured I couldn't go wrong with this one either. The artwork looked really good as well, so this just had to be an instant hit! But oh boy, was I mistaken! The moment I pressed the play-button, dub basslines kicked out of my speakers and some guy singing in that same fashion. I don't like dub-music! It usually has those crappy beeps and bleeps from cheap keyboards thrown in there, with no particular musical relevance. And yes, The Eternals also found their way to use all these weird noises. Later on the recording, you can hear some jazz-influences, which is better, but then those meaningless sounds keep popping up. I'm sure that deep inside, there is a punk heart beating, but they simply haven't found the right means to get it across. It's like they just found all these fancy programming equipment and started making these noises, losing the thought of writing a good song. But I haven't given my hopes up just yet! I once saw this American band called Euphone, do the same kind of experimental stuff live on stage, which blew me miles away. The band consisted of a bass guitarist, a whole bunch of effect-stompboxes and this amazing drummer. This guy was drumming with his right hand and simultaneously playing keyboard with the other one. That was some cool shit! After seeing them, I got their record (just released a new one on Jade Tree actually), which didn't seem to grab me right away. But while the live-experience subconsciously faded, the album managed to grow on me. Hopefully the same thing goes for The Eternals, because I know that the band has something. And while they grow on me, they might try to grow in incorporating their ideas in writing better songs.
