I consider it obligatory for everyone to know that one half of At The Drive-In goes on on with the name Sparta and the other as The Mars Volta. While the first half fully chose for Fugazi-style emocore (not bad at all), The Mars Volta is something different. Ofcourse with a name like that, you just have to be reviewed in our Mars section, but musically I'm surprised to say they fit the best in this avantgarde area. Why? Because they had the nerve to boldly go where no emocore musician has gone before. We still await for their full-length debut, but this first release called Tremulant EP promises a truly revolutionary avantrock experience. It's obvious with Cedric's voice that thoughts automatically wander off to At The Drive-In, but in The Mars Volta he dares to sound very sensitive and soft, while at other moments he sounds like wants to eat you alive. Those dynamics are also present in all three songs. Inspiration is not only taken from emocore and punk; dub, seventies funkrock, freejazz and even King Crimson-like progrock take their place on the stage with as much power as the initial emocore basics. With Geddy Lee on vocals (don't be scared, it fits the music just right). Immensely energetic, revolutionary and promising. Can't wait for the new album.
