When members of Snow Patrol, Belle & Sebastian, Arab Strap, Mogwai, and a few other Glasgow-based bands found each other in the crowd at a Sebadoh gig, they decided it would be a good idea to form a new supergroup. This is good news for those who love Scottish pop, you'd think. 'Y'all Get Scared Now, Ya Hear!' is a good record, but not in the tradition of Belle & Sebastian and old-timers like Teenage Fanclub. Although Aidan Moffat of Arab Strap is a co-conspirator on just a few songs, the sound of this record has more to do with the slow(-core) music he usually makes than the happy-hum-along-songs of Belle & Sebastian. Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol, the main conspirator, even sounds a bit like Mr. Lou 'Sebadoh' Barlow. Almost all of the songs have these beautiful sighing (female) backing vocals, giving the slower rock songs a poppy feel. Where in the first part of the record beauty lies in the detail, the second part is more up-tempo - as far this term is suitable here - and has a fuller sound. The second part of the record breathes Snow Patrol with a Folk Implosion feel. The outro even sounds like a Folk Implosion outtake of their last album 'One Part Lullaby'. But all in all, this The Reindeer Section project proves that getting a few musicians together in a studio and letting them do their thing can deliver a coherent sound. This is a fine record for those who don't mind sitting down to listen to music. But after sitting around for a few days listening to this truly addictive record, I'm still off to get the new B&S single.
