Everyone has been able to follow the process in which Maladroit was created. On their official site, weezer.com, the band even gave the opportunity to interact and have influence on the process. Every demo the band made was put on the site, so everyone had several versions of, for example, the first single Dope Nose. But that's not all: Fans were asked to give the title for the fourth album, and one came up with Maladroit. The band chose that one, even though no one really knew what it meant. It turned out that two demos were very popular, Dope Nose and Keep Fishin', and the fans were asked which one had to be the first single. They voted, and it was a small victory for Dope Nose, which is the first single because of that. But everyone was very astonished when the band even put mixed versions of the songs online. These could fit right on the album, and you could download them months before the release of the album, and there were even different mixed versions of the same song sometimes. (Which, by the way, is very interesting, because you're able to listen to how the band made some choices. An extra guitar on this one, leave some choirs out on that one, etc.) Even when Rivers Cuomo sent out an eight-track promo, there were some songs on it that changed afterwards. But that eight-track promo was the reason for the record company to interfere. They said that the band had gone too far and that their decision to put all those versions on their website would cause the record sales to decrease enormously. The audio section on the Weezer website shut down, and there were even rumours that the record company was about to refuse to release Maladroit.
But here you are: the new Weezer album in the store after all. Something that immediately attracts attention: 13 tracks on the album this time. The band used to put ten songs on the album each time, but hey: When you create songs as fast as Robert Pollard does, ten just isn't enough. And the songs are even shorter than ever, so it would have become a 25-minute-lasting album. A Godspeed You Black Emperor! song is even longer. A lot of similarities with The Green Album: short catchy songs with minimal lyrics. You play them once and remember them forever. It will always be a shame that Rivers Cuomo won't write Pinkerton-style anymore. Lyrics that were as funny as sad (falling in love with a lesbian, the unreachable fan in Japan), and the songs were more complex. This is just new-style Weezer that we had to get used to since The Green Album. But it's not all the same: The songs have never been this raw. Some filthy guitar solos, heavy bass, and even some punk rock on Possibilities. It's true that Dope Nose and Keep Fishin' are most prominent the first time you hear the album and therefore good singles. But there's much more: Burndt Jamb has the Island In The Sun function on Maladroit, smooth and relaxing in-between a lot of guitar violence. The joy of Love Explosion and Slob bursts out of your speakers, and - well - so does the rest. So let's all agree that Maladroit will be the soundtrack for the sunny days this Summer. Enjoy.
