This new Weezer release is a limited one. Six live songs on one EP, which you can get in little stores or maybe mail order. The show is recorded in Japan, so there is the usual overenthusiastic crowd cheering when they hear just the slightest recognizable opening of tunes. And there are some nice openings on the tracks they chose for this EP, like the guitar riff on Holiday, from the legendary blue album, or the mellow tunes from Island In The Sun. And as often seen in live shows, this recognition leads to satisfaction when you actually attend the gig. And this time they chose parts from the right concert to put on an album, because Weezer isn't really that much of a consistent live band. They can rock the crowd one time but sometimes they play a short set with a cold engine another. But these versions are very appropriate.
I do wonder why they only put six tracks on The Lion And The Witch. These are times when a lot of live shows can be downloaded from the web, and when you check the official band site regularly, it's very easy to get some of their live concerts. And of course these consist of more tracks. Because now you also start to wonder, why put Death And Destruction on it, because this is one of the lesser songs off their latest — Maladroit. And also some question marks when you hear the guitar play (not a song; just whatever) before they burst out with Dope Nose. On the other hand, the choices of Falling For You and El Scorcho are perfect, because of the simple fact that they are from the excellent and very underestimated Pinkerton album. These songs rock! The Lion And The Witch is really amusing, but once again: Do try to find some of their live gigs online so you can also hear a full Weezer concert. This time, more is better.
