'Home is where the hurt is...' sings Ken Low at the start of First Water. You know the trip will not be filled with flowers and sunshine. The band knows about traveling. Ken Low traveled from the US to England where he teamed up with Canadian Colleen Browne (Pale Saints and Warm Jets) and Frenchman Jean-Marc Butty on drums. The latter also appeared on P.J. Harvey¹s To Bring You My Love. Like his soulmates Nick Cave and Jim White, guitarist and singer Ken Low knows what it feels like to have a hellhound on his trail. He sings about hurt, demons and loss in such a dry voice it makes you want to reach for a glass of firewater. The bass and drums that accompany Ken¹s gloomy voice are sparse yet very effective. Though at times the guitar breaks out in an icy frenzy, the overall feeling is slow and hypnotic. Why rush towards the end? Enjoy the pain of White Hotel, it's your best companion on those dark and lonely roads.
