How did you meet or get involved with The Venue?
Jonas: Founder. Came back to Stockholm from living in Paris and Belfast. I
was in a good few bands before that and wanted to put together a new one.
So, I spent some time thinking about what kind of band I wanted to be in and
realised that the music I really got buzzing from playing live was 6T's
stuff, et voìla - called Peter, who is the only person below 45 years old
more obsessed with 6T's music (and especially EARLY 6T's - not your usual
black-hair-dye-mascara-post-mod) than me and my brothers that I know. Our
first drummer went off for a Ph.D. in History, the second to play with
Swedish ethno/folk/drone/rock act Hedningarna. We hope to keep Hasse, if he
doesn't get drafted to the reunion of Faces... My brothers and myself spend
loads of time together and like the same music anyway, so it felt pretty
natural to be in the same band.
Anders: Jonas needed a rhythm guitar player for his new band.
Peter: I knew Jonas from earlier on when I lived in Västerås as a teenager.
I had an indiepopgroup called Piggy In the Middle and he was in Artichoke.
We played a gig together, I saw his Hofner-bass, pointed at my
Rickenbacker-12-string, and said that not we but our instruments should be
in a band together. Eventually it happened, when Jonas showed me some of his
songs which I liked. I seldom use that 12-string anymore, though.
Fredrik: Jonas (singer, bass player, songwriter) is my brother. I got
involved, mainly, because he wanted an extra singer/brother (you know
three/two is never enough!) and some maracas, tambourine and such-like.
Hans: I run a club/restaurant for live music in Vasteras, Sweden (1h west of
Stockholm) and I met and played with Peter and Jonas for the first time on
an improvised gig, in a sort of fair, with a band called "The Grand Old
Softies" (which I still play in beside of The Venue). I guess they liked my
kind of playing. At that time I hadn´t play for several years so the contact
with J and P was really a break for me. I came back to playing.
Where did the name The Venue come from?
Jonas: Where ever we go - the venue starts buzzing.
Where ever we are - any boring diner, any uncleaned kitchen, any smelly
back alley, turns into a vibrating venue.
Why 60's music?
Jonas: Cos it's the best music to play live and because we're obsessed with
the combination close harmony vocals and nitty gritty lust for life
aggression sounds and screaming.
Fredrik: I don't really know. I just like it. We have always listened to
music from that period at home (mom & dad) and then I start getting my own
favourite bands, like the Small Faces, the Who, the Kinks and so on, that
differs a bit from my parents favourites.
Anders: I grew up with it (too).
Hans: Like the 50´s was the great era of jazz the 60's is the great era of
pop, everything happened then. That´s why we are still coming back.
Peter: The brothers talk about their parents and Hasse lived it (the 60´s.)
My parents wasn’t that hooked on 60´s music. Actually my father really
didn’t start buying records before the seventies I think. It was all Bee
Gees and E.L.O at home. But I saw The Beatles on tv as an eight-year-old and
was forever hooked. At the moment I´m personally more involved with softer
bands and artists like The Monkees,Franqoise Hardy, The Left Banke,Glen
Campbell, The Zombies and Beach Boys, but it´s still a blast to be Pete
Townshend on stage. We have to mention the Hollies too. Really
underestimated. A swedish reviewer called The Venue a happy genetic
experiment between The Hollies and The Small Faces, and I think that´s right
on the money. Hollie harmony with Faces energy.
Good or bad to be in a band with 3 (or 2) brothers?
Jonas: Seriously, I can't come up with any bad things. As I said, we spend
time together all the time anyway (for example: my youngest evil brother
Anders tricked me into being out way too long yesterday). What's good about
it? Well, you know them, you can trust them and all that - but hey, does
that really differ from playing with your close friends?! Naaah, fekk it,
but we look pretty good together, neh?
Fredrik: I don't think about it that much. We (me and my brothers) are
seeing each other nearly everyday anyway. So we might just play together as
well. Maybe it's different for Peter & Hans (the non-brothers) But I don't
think they care that much either.
Hans: I think it´s good. The brothers are really helping out and I think
everyone is doing that.
Any thoughts or comments on the current Swedish music scene?
Hans: It´s tough right now, many hungry bands but on the other hand many
bands are very polished sort of bubble gum oriented. I think that it´s
important to do things that will come across and energy and improvisation
helps a lot. I think we got that.
Jonas: Sooooo many good bands coming up from everywhere and a live scene
that has started to resurrect - from both castrated and dead to just about
alive, but constantly growing: there are a lot of people out there who're
reeeeeally pissed off with the live situation and are trying to do
something about it.
Fredrik: It's getting better all the time... There's a lot of great bands
everywhere you turn. In many different styles.
Peter: It´s great. Some of my favourites apart from the bands I´m involved
with myself are: Nicolai Dunger, First Floor Power, Vega, Aerospace and
Isolation Years. Check them all out.
What's in The Venue's future?
Hans: Hopefully we get more gigs both in Sweden and abroad and especially in
The States.
Anders: Loads of gigs, I hope!
Peter: World domination.
Fredrik: Record deal, world tour, retire at 30. But a rehearsal place
wouldn't be too bad for a start.
Jonas: To record two happy snappy albums, then grow moustaches and make
Peter bring his sitar to the studio...
Erm... nearest goal is to tie together all the contacts we've made in for
example Holland, Germany and the US. I reeeeally want to play festivals
this summer. And I reeeeally want a rehearsing space...
We've been waiting for the world long enough!
