First of all, you come from Belgium, land of chocolate, beer and waffles.
What made you guys start out playing rockmusic?
"Good music, the ability to play the guitar, lots of spare time in the
weekends and some friends in the same situation."
You have been compared to Pavement. If you were a reviewer, how would you
describe the Fence sound?
"Sloppy poppy music, made with drums and guitars and a Big Muff distortion
pedal and played by four ordinary dudes having tons of fun. Sometimes very
intimate, but often trying to blast like a hurricane..."
If I remember well, I saw you guys a couple of years ago playing at the
Rock Rally finals. Am I turning senile or did it really happen? If so, can you
tell us more about that experience?
"We got to be second at the HUMO's Rock Rally in 1998. It all happened very
fast, and we never expected anything to happen, but I guess we got lucky
because the members of the jury liked our kind of music."
So how is the Belgian music scene like? Do you guys perform a lot?
"We are not really into the Belgian scene, which is mainly concentrated
around Antwerp and Ghent. We live in Limburg, where there are lots of
interesting bands, but the music scene-feeling is less strong. We just go
our own way, meeting lots of interesting people who support us.
On the average, we perform two or three times every week, mostly in Belgium
and the Netherlands."
The debut record was released on a German label, right? How did that come about?
No, the CD was released by Labelman, a small, brand new Belgian label. Distribution goes through De Konkurrent, a large Dutch label. At the Rock Rally, we met Steven from Toutpartout (www.toutpartout.be), who became our booking agent. He put his faith in us and some other Belgian bands (Vandal X, JF Muck, Kamino, ...) and decided to create his very own label, Labelman, in cooperation with De Konkurrent. His idea was to release CDs from his promising new bands... So far some six releases have been made. And more interesting releases will follow.
But in a way you're right about that German Label. 'Nois-o-lution' (a German label) is going to release Geronimo in Germany (off course). I guess it will be released by the end of march."
What's up with the drummer being into techno?
"We are all into different kinds of music, and techno is a part that. The
drummer Samuel is more into techno then the rest of us, but there is
nothing wrong with that, is there?"
Have you toured already? Supported any big bands?
"We haven't done any real touring, because mostly we play only in the
weekends. We did supports for Elliot Smith, Sebadoh, Ben
Folds Five and some small festivals with the likes of Mogwai, Wheat, Les Rhytmes Digitales ..."
Experienced anything that would fit in the Led Zeppelin biography 'Hammer of
the Gods'?
"Usually we relax most of the time when we are 'on the road'. The most
exciting experiences are getting lost, having a flat tire with the van, getting drunk with crazy fans in small towns...."
Anything new and exciting happening in the Fence world?
"The single Mary Lou is a small hit on StuBru, which is pretty new and exciting for us... We are looking forward to touring abroad (maybe Germany and France). New single 'Always Ultra' is coming up, including the Red Zebra cover, performed for Studio Brussel!"
