Can you tell me something about the history of Glassjaw?
"Glassjaw started in 1993/1994. I got a job; working at a summer camp, being a counselor for little children. I
got there and I met someone who was wearing the same type of bands shirts as me, my guitar player Beck.
He was 14, I was 13. He was wearing a Bad Brains shirt, I was wearing an Anthrax shirt. He said: "that’s my
favorite band" and I said: "no, that’s my favorite band". In the end, he took the bus home with me. We started
playing guitar together. Eventually, we’ve named it Glassjaw. We’ve been through 21 line-up changes since
that. Me and him are the original members. Right now in the band is Todd [Weinstock, guitar], Mannie
[Manuel Carrero, bass] and Larry [Gorman, drums].
"
When I put your record in my CD player, I thought the whole thing was going to explode. Where do you get
the energy and how the hell could you record it that way?
"As a person, I guess I’m kinda naturally, just like ‘Hooooow!’ [with a high voice]. If you ever felt so strongly
about something that it makes you shake your fists and your eyes bulge out, you know how it happens. It just
happens. It’s the thrill of playing in front of people night after night.
Two: more important to me, if the anger and my frustration and the things that fuels me to write the music in
the first place, that also fuels me to jump around and fucking play this live and anger music.
"
Almost every album that’s been produced by Ross Robinson turns out to be a so-called best seller (Korn,
Slipknot, Limp Bizkit). Was that the reason to let him produce the album?
"No! He picked us! We didn’t even approach him. I barely knew his name before. But he called me at my
house. He had heard the tape and wanted to sign us. In signing us, he was like: "Yeah, and I produce the
record"."
And that was okay?
"Yeah! Of course! I knew all the work he had done, but I wasn’t acquainted with his name at that time. Now
he’s my best friend. He’s a member of the band.
"
How big was Ross’ influence on the music?
"Big. He didn’t exactly change, you know, that much of the music. He made us play the music that much more
honestly. He made us play so sincerely and honestly that it had a big effect on how good the music came out.
It’s much more impactful.
"
But I can imagine that some people are wondering if it’s still a true Glassjaw-sound that we hear on the
album, as it’s Ross Robinson…
"Yeah, but Ross Robinson made it more Glassjaw. We thought it was gonna be more Ross Robinson, and
less of what we really meant. He brought out what Glassjaw was really about."
Ross also co-wrote some songs…
"Well, he didn’t sit down with a guitar and write songs. We had the songs written and he just helped organize
certain parts. He did the job of what a producer does. But he did the job of what the best producer in the
world does.
"
I’d like to describe your sound as a mix of Deftones and Far, but which bands have really influenced the
band?
"Bad Brains, Faith No More, Anthrax. Personally, my favorite bands are Elvis Costello, Tori Amos, Depeche
Mode, the Cure.
"
How would you describe your music? You’re being pushed in the nu-metal/ spookycore-scene. Do you like
that?
"We’re a band and we play music. There’s songs on the record that have not metal involved and there’s
songs on the record that have no light stuff in it. We’re just a band. We’re a band that reflects everyday’s
human emotion and human anger. You know, like one day I’m totally fucking frustrated and I want to kill
myself and I sound like that. And that’s what the music is gonna sound like. You know, bands like Faith No
More play like R ’n B, like metal, like hip-hop, punk, funk… across the board, just what we are. It reflects like
how human emotion can be.
"
The songs and lyrics on the album are, especially for you as a vocalist, rather personal and emotional. Which
song on the album is the most emotional song for you and why? What is that song about?
"Everything you ever wanted to know about silence, the title track. It’s the most emotional song to me, ‘cause
it deals with… well, a lot of the songs deal with individual events that happened over the course of 2 and a
half years of my life. But that one song is basically about the sickness that I have, that I suffer from [Daryl
suffers from Crone’s disease, an intestinal disease]. That song is about that sickness and the whole two and
a half years. That song is a reflection on what it’s like to be me.
"
Your album counts 12 songs. If you had a CD player that could only be programmed for 11 songs; which song
would you skip and why?
"That’s a really horrible question! I guess ‘Ry Ry’s song’, ‘cause that’s old. I like what it’s about, I like what I’m
saying, but I don’t think musically it fits on the record as much as everything else on the record. It’s got a
happier feel to it.
"
Are you going to do a lot of touring now?
"I guess about the next 11 or 12 days with the Deftones here in Europe and then after that, we’re gonna do
the US of Deftones for a month and a half.
"
How is it like to tour with the Deftones?
"Well, tonight is the first show. I’ve only met about two of them, I just woke up. But I’m very excited.
"
What would you tell people if you had to persuade them to come to a Glassjaw-show?
"Well, if they’re annoyed with the small things that happen to them in their everyday life and they want to
relieve some anger, come see us playing. They want to see anger be invented. If they want it themselves,
that anger fucking slipped out, some see us.
"
Choose one of the following and tell me why you chose it:
Deftones or Far?
"Deftones. As a band, I’m just more into that style of music. I like angry more than ‘poppy’.
"
Touring or recording?
"Recording. [After thinking for a little while]. No, I take that back. Touring. We’re all about playing live. We’re
just about the re-creation of music live, night after night.
"
Madonna or Christina Aguilera?
"Madonna. I’m a big Madonna-fan. I just like the music.
"
Sitting all night home alone doing nothing or watching television all night on a couch with your
parents-in-law?
"I don’t have parents-in-law yet, but I guess ‘doing nothing’. I hate watching television.
"
As you might have heard, this year the European Championship Soccer is organized here in the
Netherlands. I don’t know if you heard about it...
"No...
"
Well, I wanted to ask you which country would become European champion soccer this year, according to
you?
"The New York Yankees!
"
Okay, let’s have a look at Glassjaw’s future. What will the future bring for you?
"I hope a lot of playing, a lot of touring. I don’t really know what to expect. I hope a lot of music is to be made.
That’s all I want to do in my life; keep making music. And I want to be happy. In essence if that means be
poor, rich, whatever it means..."
Are you happy now?
"Yeah!!!"
