You guys have been together for quite a while. Can you tell me something about the history of the band?
David (drummer): "I can tell you real briefly. We basically started of at 1993. We were all in high school. We were just a garage-band from Northern California. Now we live in this small town called backerville. There is kind of a cool scene happening around Northern California, like Deftones, far, will haven and al those bands. We were living there while all that stuff was happening. We started a band in 1993 and we'd play at parties, teencentres-shows. Anywhere and everywhere we could, you know. We were able to put out our own record over the years. We have put out 3 independent records on our own label.
We sold them at shows. Then we got to the point, to a certain level where we were able to headline clubs all around California. Then a major label started taking notice of us. We ended up getting a demo-deal through Warner-Brothers Records. We had a month to write five songs. We did it and they passed on us. But Dreamworks heard the demo and they were really excited about it. They ended up signing us. Last year in October we started with Dreamworks and we went into the studio to record it at November first and the record was released April 25th of this year in America. It sold like over 2 million records so far. A million records were sold in the first two months. I read that somewhere. I was like: really, is that what happened???"
How old were you when the band started?
David: "I was 17 years."
Tobin (bassplayer): "I was 13 years."
David: "He actually wasn't our original bassplayer. He was filling in."
Tobin: "And it just worked out better, you know and they just kept me in ever since."
What was your sound like in the beginning of Papa Roach?
David: "It was a little funkier. We were in like everything from Mr. Bungle, Faith No More and Primus. We grew al up with the pixies, fugazi and they all are great bands.
"
Is it true that bands like Incubus, Snot and Fu Manchu have opened shows for you?
Tobin: "Yes! That is true.
"
How can it happen that those bands already had a major record deal long before Papa Roach had? Does that hurt?
David: "No, not at all. Fu Manchu was a local band. We played with them long before we both got signed. We were in our hometown and we were getting it on and Incubus and Snot are our friends and they opened our show.
"
And then suddenly you sell over 2 million copies of your album 'Infest' in the USA. How does that feel?
David: "It feels good! Our dream has come true. We started out as doing it for fun and now it's our full-time job.
"
So let's talk about the album; it has been produced by Jay Baumgardner who worked with Coal Chamber, System of a Down and Spineshank. How was the cooperation with him?
David: "It was cool. When we first met Jay, he just asked us what kind of record we wanted to make. We basically told him that we wanted to make a record, kinda like, stuck true to our lives. Which is like in your face, no samples just raw. In our past recordings before we produced them ourselves and we never were able to quite capture the energy that we put out live."
Tobin: "We wanted a high-energy record. We wanted to, if it's just like you're there."
David: "We weren't able to do that on the last couple of records. But I think with this record we really scored with it.
"
What is the best song on the album according to you?
David: "I don't think I have a best song. I really can't pick a favorite one.
"
Coby's lyrics are inspired by heavy things such as divorce, struggles with alcohol, suicide etc. Did he really have a bad youth or what gave him the inspiration for such lyrics?
David "No, this is life. A lot of people are going through these things. He just puts it down on paper.
"
Last Wednesday you guys played in London. Was it the first time you went to Europe?
Tobin: "Yes, that was the first time we went to Europe. It was off the hook man! Tonight is gonna be our second show.
"
Is it finally a vindication for years and years of hard work?
David: "Yes, I think so. Now we are finally to the point where it's paying off. It's so much better than I even thought it would ever be. This doesn't happen to many bands. I really feel fortuned that we finally made it. Now it's our time. Our goal was not to have a day job, we wanted to go on tour. And that's what happened.
"
You are going to do a tour with Limp Bizkit. Will that result in the final break through?
David: "I think we already have broken trough. It's al about Rock and Roll.
"
Choose one of the following and tell me why you chose it:
First single 'Last resort' or your most recent one 'Broken Home'?
Tobin: "We like 'em both and that's why we released them both. Our first single 'Last Resort' is really good, because it defines who we are. 'Broken Home' takes it to the next level. It's a little more melodic."
David: "It isn't even a rocksong.
"
Angels or insects?
David: "There is a movie that's called 'Angels and Insects'. When we were recording the song we were the insects in the city of angels.
"
Nasty interviewers or fucked-up fans?
David: "Let's see, I love our fans. So I think I'd choose our fans over anything else. Not that I don't like you!
"
I saw you guys performing live at the David Letterman show. Al Gore recently said: 'if you can handle David Letterman, you can handle Saddam Hussein'. Do you agree with him at this point? Why?
David: "We didn't really meet David Letterman. He didn't interview us. We waited in a little room before we got on stage. We played our song and that was it. We went back to our hotel.
"
What are your plans for the future?
David: "Tour! We just want to get the music out. And then we'll go back to the studios. And do it all over again. In the beginning of next year we want to come back. We'd like to do some festivals. We want Papa Roach worldwide.
"
You chose the name Papa Roach because of the strong characteristic of a cockroach to survive.
Tobin: "It was Coby's granddad's name. But it became a mascot for us. Just like you said.
"
A lot of people are saying rap-metal is dead. How long will Papa Roach survive?
David: "We're not just Rap-metal. We represent Rock and Roll. We don't just represent one of the styles. It's just: 'Rock and Roll forever!'
"
Is there a last thing you would like to say to our readers?
David: "We are coming back, so come see us and buy the album. Experience our life show. Viva la cuccaracha!"
