"What the fuck happened to Jon Spencer?" If some divine comic artist would
have decided to draw a think bubble above the heads of the spectators in
Paradiso during the first part of the Blues Explosion's concert this is what
would be in it. Drummer Russell Simmins radiated more energy than the
frontman, usually the exemplification of the "Explosion" part of his band's
moniker. Songs were played in a row without even a "Blues Explosion Number
One!" shout out in-between.
It's not that the band was bad; the top notch material, both old and new,
was played with a tight groove. Great guitar music to dance to, but the
crowd was clearly expecting more. Spencer seemed to realise this; it was as
if he was constantly trying to charge himself for the explosion, but there
was something wrong with the detonation.
Only towards the end of the concert Spencer found his inner demons. A
theremin solo, desperate calls of "Baby!" and finally Spencer who drops on
the floor like he's been struck by lightning. After that the encores could
only disappoint. When you think about it, it seems simply physically
impossible to keep up such intensity for the entire show during the whole
tour.
Openers The Yeah Yeah Yeahs turned out to be full blown No Wave revivalists.
The trio consists of a rail thin guitarist with a coup a la Robert Smith, a
singer in a pink cocktaildress with a huge white tape X and several slogans
on it, with a fingerless leather glove on her right hand as a nice vintage
accessory and a drummer who just wants to be the drummer. Everything was
there: the demented marching rhythms, the warped blues riffs, the shouted
slogans. The only missing was the genuine no future feeling, both with the
band and the audience. I guess the recession hasn't been long enough for
that yet. The songs, that sometimes reminded of early PJ Harvey too, were a
mixed bunch of forgetable and prime quality material. It makes you almost
hope the economic slump last, so we can experience great things from them in
the (no) future.
