It starts with Basement Jaxx asking: "Where's your head at?" If it was stuck in the real world, completely offline, you probably missed the cyber-hype so far. That is, if you also managed to avoid Kylie Minogue covering a bootleg remix of New Order vs... yes, her own recent hit 'Can't Get You Out Of My Head' at an awards show recently. And to say it all started as a Soulwax side-project. The two brothers fronting the band had too much free time between touring and recording with Soulwax, so they started playing records for anyone who invited them at (after)parties. But it soon got out of hand. Between the party and this CD, there was the hype. Bootleg remixes were the new thing to download (after porn pictures, natch). New York London Paris Munich - Everyone's talking bootleg remixes these days.
2 Many DJ's is just a party record. Just? Yes, merely that. The primary aim of The Fucking (formerly Flying) Dewaele Brothers is to get you to bump bump bump on the dancefloor.
No time for intellectual navel-gazing, because the body is too busy moving to the sounds. You could see it as a perfect example of postmodernism: de-contextualizing the music, splicing it in pieces, and then reassembling it to obtain a product that disregards the past, present, and future. But who cares about that? This is just a pure fun record. It is your records trying to wrestle their way into your stereo all at once. The bootlegs, the covers, the remixes, the obscure oldies... It's all in there, trying to scream for attention. No need to sit down and tear it to pieces. It disregards coolness, and in this world Emerson, Lake, And Palmer are just as hip as The Cramps. Sure, The Velvet Underground and The Breeders will wake up the indie rocker in you, Dolly Parton will dust off those Eighties glitter memories, and so on, and so on, and so on. The Dewaele brotherss just find the hook in these samples and join them to make a super-catchy sound. So what does it sound like? It sounds like The Stooges having No Fun with Salt-N-Pepa, Destiny's Child rubbing shoulders with 10cc on a Dreadlock Holiday... because it is just that: just a fun pop record.
