What's in a band's name? The album's title is longer than its total running time, clocking in at precisely 27 minutes and 27 seconds. Still, the heart-wrenching outings from Massachusetts-based 27 feel like a never-ending journey through Never Never Land. It's hard to believe that all of this has been created in a living room somewhere in Massachusetts, but then again everything seems to be possible after listening to 'Songs From The Edge Of The Wing'. Sometimes it gets close to wandering some great, lost American highway as a rolling stone, with only the lonesome sound of a Greyhound bus rushing by. Turn around, and you'll find yourself surrounded by Chinese temples or be sitting on top of Kilimanjaro. This is scary, soul-seeking music that constantly twists and turns into hypnotic shapes and colours of all kinds, dragging you all the way down into the deepest pits of mankind and far beyond your own imagination. Stepping a million light years away from the mainstream and everything else that could be defined as accessible, 27 are a band or project that is here to confuse you, but also to leave you begging for more. To give you some idea of what this complex album is like: A song like the 'The Lone Mariachi' is schizophrenic trip-hop for the down-and-out, 'Warm Hands, Cold Heart' is electronic jazz, much in the style of Portishead meet Tom Waits on a lazy Sunday afternoon, and I haven't found out what 'Great Brook Valley' is all about. One thing that keeps you listening is the marvellous tension created by Maria Christopher's sweet vocals. Sweet, but not like candy. The final track on 27's debut is one from Neil Young's 'Zuma' album. 'Danger Bird' is surprisingly true to the original version, with that thick wall of electric guitars, but Christopher's gorgeous vocals shine through a landscape of distortion. It's without any doubt that if you really want to fully understand the scrambled noises of 27 you have to listen to the record, but don't be surprised to find some of your questions unanswered.
