Some bands just slip past your attention, for years. Take Amp, for example. Existing since the early nineties; is somewhat connected with bigger names like Flying Saucer Attack and The Third Eye Foundation; have prior albums produced by Robert Hampson (ex-Loop, Main); were, for some time, on the mighty Kranky label. And all this time, I knew nothing of the band. Shame on me.
Luckily, that has changed. And with L'Amour Invisible, I finally discovered this truly eclectic leftfield band. What they present to us in just over an hour is amazing in variety and quality. Never have I heard a band that combines different musical styles so easily as Amp. Late night jazz and electronic noise? Piece of cake to mix them. Light electropop, Steve Reich-minimalism, and threatening soundscapes? Almost the same kind of music. At least, so it seems. The way of combining all those kinds of music seems so natural that one begins to wonder why someone else hasn't done this before. And that's yet another compliment for Amp.
And so it happens that Stereolab, Steve Reich, Cinematic Orchestra and The Third Eye Foundation go hand in hand. Avant-garde? Absolutely, but in a suprisingly accessible, and amazingly good way.
