The name Angra will be no stranger to most metal fans, as this Brazilian band has already put out a number of critically acclaimed albums and EPs, such as Holy Land and Angels Cry. But a few years ago, the band fell apart due to musical differences, leaving only the original guitarists and main songwriters Kiko Loureiro and Rafael Bittencourt. Together with three new band members, Angra released the aptly titled album Rebirth last year, and now they're back with a new EP called Hunters And Prey.
The EP starts with the song Live And Learn, which is a powerful, but rather unoriginal, Helloween-like, up-tempo track. The interesting part begins with the second track, as none of the following tracks sounds like the others. Bleeding Heart is a sensitive, yet not-sappy, piano ballad, while the title track Hunters And Prey displays some of the band's musical roots by combining the typical hyperfast Angra guitarwork with Latin rhythms. (Okay, Sepultura already used Brazilian drums on their Roots album, but so what?) The mid-tempo song Eyes Of Christ has a bit of an AOR feel due to the many keyboards on this track. After that, the tempo slows even further down with two acoustic versions of existing Angra songs. The remake of Rebirth is a pleasant, relaxing song, and the acoustic version of Heroes Of Sand sounds a bit folky.
If only the guys had picked up the pace again after these songs! But no, for some reason, they decided to lull us all to sleep with a cover version of Mama, by Genesis (just ask your dad who they are!). The original is quite dull, and unfortunately, the Angra version is just as boring. No Latin drums, no sudden acceleration, no rearranging into a heavy power ballad; it's just an exact carbon copy of the old version. Fortunately, the next song wakes us up again, as the EP ends with Caça E Caçador, which is the Portuguese version of Hunters And Prey. The use of the Portuguese language adds a little extra to this song, making it sound even more exotic than the English version.
But after that, there's even more! The EP also contains a multimedia track with tons of photos of the band made on various tours, a Rebirth-screensaver, and a video for the song Rebirth (which gave an error on my computer, by the way, but that could be attributed to our dear friend Bill Gates). All in all, with well over 38 minutes of music and an extensive multimedia section, the Hunters And Prey EP is a decent way to spend your hard-earned cash!
