Ah, jazzcore! Long time since I heard this kind of music. Since the departure of jazzcore gods Victim's Family (now reformed, but that first new MP3 I heard of them wasn't exactly good), the world isn't flooded with this kind of music. To simply call Canada's Association Area jazzcore would be too, eh, simple, but they sure have drawn some influences from the nervous Victim's Family mixture of hardcore, noise, and jazz. Association Area bomb the listener with not only that jazzcore - they also deliver metal, pure noise, mathrock, and plain weirdness. Inaccessible as fuck, especially with the constantly over-the-top screaming vocals. There's hardly any resting point on this demanding album. Other musical references? Dillinger Escape Plan, Mr. Bungle, Naked City, John Zorn, Voivod (which have reunited with their old singer Snake, oh yeah!), Boredoms, and Thought Industry high on speed. Yes, these names are mentioned on the label's website as well, but they are indeed suitable. Add to this some intense Barkmarket noise, and there you have it: Association Area. There's so much happening in these 35 minutes that it is best taken in limited quantities. The production sounds a bit thin, but if you're looking for music in the above-mentioned styles, Association Area is well worth checking out.
