Does sadness give you a pleasant feeling? Can melancholy make you happy? Do you forget time when the music is as atmospheric as wide open space?
If you are able to confirm the questions above, I strongly recommend to get of your lazy ass and hurry to your nearest recordshop, and order a copy of The Grey Knowledge by Toronto-based loner M.D. Matheson a.k.a. Beef Terminal as fast as you can.
Introspection is an art. If one is able to bind it with a feeling of overwhelming space, it's not that far from sensational. Beef Terminal succeeds in combining two complete different aspects, but presents this as if they were to meant to be combined all along. The songs are introvert and intimate, but at the same time give you a feeling of an intense perception of the open space in the universe. The music leads your mind to either a quiet place inside or levitates you to heights you never dreamed of going.
How does Beef Terminal do it? His songs are often not more than sketches. His colours on the palette are limited to guitar, drummachine and the occasional keyboards and samples. But still he manages to create rich sketches, in a lo-fi kind of way. The simple structures are reminiscent to Slowdive, Yellow6 and Mogwai on its more quiet moments. The sounds are never harsh or intrusive, not revolutionary. But that last aspect isn't a necessity for making a great, and truly pleasant sounding album. Music for every occasion, and suitable for each moment of the day.
