Corrosion of Conformity started out as a hardcore band. Then they went into the crossover territory (of the hardcore-metal kind that is, not the rap-metal) and released the classic 'Blind'. But a few line-up changes and one album, "Deliverance", later they were among the front-runners of stonerrock. And that is where they still are with their new album 'America's Volume Dealer'. What makes CoC stand out in the stonerrock niche is that they're capable of writing actual songs, instead of just head-nor-tail grooves. This puts them in the same category as for example Monster Magnet or Metallica. In fact CoC sounds a whole lot like (Re)Load-era Metallica. James Hetfield also toured with them and did some vocals on their previous album, 'Wiseblood'. And the same people who hated 'Load', do also hate CoC's current direction. CoC's songwriting is just a lot more consistent, missing the highs like 'Until It Sleeps' or 'The Outlaw Torn', but fortunately also lows like almost everything Metallica released after 'Load' and Lars Ulrich. The average quality of CoC's songs is high. But CoC is not a mere Metallica rip-off. Being from the south of the US, they have southern rock influences like can be heard on 'Stare Too Long', featuring former Allman Brothers guitarist Warren Haynes. The rhythms sometimes contain just a touch of New Orleans-style swamp funk as best showcased in 'Diablo Blvd.', one of the album's best tracks. 'America's Volume Dealer' brings nothing radically different, but there is enough variation in the songs and the overall high quality of the songwriting have made this one of my favourite albums of the past months. And there is one thing that cannot be denied: Corrosion of Conformity rocks!
