"Crowned in chrome, I took a ride in the wrong direction." Part of the Archers of Loaf, an indie rock band that has made records drenched in white noise, Erich Bachmann now fronts the Crooked Fingers. So did taking the wrong direction lead him in the right places? Not really, unless darkness is where he feels most comfortable. 'New Drink for the Old Drunk' could very well be a tribute to Tom Waits, who isn't averse to writing about life in the gutter like Erich Bachmann. Just like the grainy picture of the swan floating on the water, Erich's vocal chords seemed to have been dragged through gravel. The instrumentation is simple but effective: By using only guitar, violin, cello, and electrochime, Erich Bachmann evokes a gothic mood. One drink can forget your troubles, a dozen obviously makes you a broken man. Just look at Shane MacGowan. In 'Under Sad Stars' he might hope that a solution will be found in his glass. But by the end, in the plaintive 'A Little Bleeding', he remains alone in the cold and lonely night. This is clearly down-beat rock without a happy ending. With Archers of Loaf he redefined college rock, with Barry Black he exercised his love for (largely) instrumental rock. Now, with Crooked Fingers, he looks in his heart and finds nothing but sadness. Can you say indie blues?
