Three years is a very long time to wait for a new album, especially when the former album is a masterpiece.
That's the case with the new Daryll-Ann (NL) album Happy Traum. After the release of Daryll-Ann Weeps in 1996 the band rested for a while and played some Byrds-covers for the Marlboro Flashback tour. After that Jelle Paulusma (vocals/guitar) and Anne Soldaat (guitar/vocals) started to create some new songs in the weekend and decided they wanted to make this album with Coen Paulusma (keyboard/percussional instruments) but without Jeroen Vos (bass) and Jeroen Kleijn (drums). Anne Soldaat played bass and drums on the new album.
Happy Traum starts with the first single 'Surely Justice'. It's a very happy lovesong that sticks into your mind the first time you hear it. That's not something normal for Daryll-Ann because usually they write songs you've got to listen to more often to really understand the beauty of the song. And that's exactly what we hear on the other songs of this album. Compared to Daryll-Ann Weeps the songs are more tranquil. There's only one up-tempo song (Feelings) where the vocals are distorted. This song has the property we sometimes miss on Happy Traum. Like no other band Daryll-Ann can combine the lyrics, the music and emotions.
On this album we don't hear any striking climax in one song but we get something different instead: Beautiful shaped pop songs with a perfection that almost frightens you. Sometimes you've really got to concentrate to hear the percussional instruments and other sounds that make the songs sound so natural. The influence of the Byrds is very obvious. The band sounds more sixties than ever and even some songtitles make us think of that time (Hope, Love & Happiness ; Money Or Love). When you listen to The Leaves you can visualize the falling leaves in autumn and the atmosphere created in Riverside is really soothing. Happy Traum is a work of art you can take everywhere you go. The message is clear: If only one person in the whole wide world would dislike Happy Traum, it would be highly underestimated.
