The Netherlands seem almost packed with bands who adore the McCartney songs of The Beatles. Johan (the band of course, not our beloved Beats editor) displayed their love last year with the good album 'Pergola', Daryll-Ann showed it on all of their past recordings, and it's no coincidence they both flourish in the house of Excelsior Recordings. Most of their acts have that specific guitarpop sound, heavily influenced by Sir Paul. Of course, that's not a bad thing in itself, but this approach doesn't exactly lead to the most adventurous kind of music. For 'Trailer Tales', the new album by Daryll-Ann, the tale starts off rather differently: Opening song 'A Piece Of Work (I'm Trying Her)' is, although still very much Beatlesque, a not so easy and very psychedelic pop song, which would have made a good addition to 'Revolver'. It promises a different angle, but as soon as the song has ended, the angle is being straightened: The following music is, from the first to the last minute, nice and neat and completely coloured within the lines. The quality, however, is from a fairly high level: The musicians are good, and the vocals are great. But it's the songwriting skills that make the music, and that's something you needn't worry about in the case of Daryll-Ann. Finely crafted guitarpop songs and nice, melodic ballads constantly battle (in a gentle and calm fashion, of course) for the biggest spot on 'Trailer Tales'. A battle with no winners, because both aspects are equally important in the world of Daryll-Ann. A world filled with peace, love, and happiness, without thunderclouds or rain. Very lovely, but after some time one begins to long for some refreshing raindrops or some lightning strikes to release the tension of everyday life. And at moments like this, it is a pity that Daryll-Ann decided not to write more songs like the aforementioned 'A Piece Of Work (I'm Trying Her)', because it would have made the album a much more balanced piece. The sweet song overload unfortunately makes it impossible not to crave for something more bitter.
