Heideroosjes are loved and hated. On one hand, the so-called real punks
couldn't care less for these Dutch punk rockers. On the other hand,
Heideroosjes brought lots of teenagers into contact with punk rock music. Who
doesn't remember the summer festivals in Holland where almost ten percent of
the fifteen year olds wore an "I'm not deaf, I'm just ignoring you!" shirt.
The band has been around for twelve-and-a-half years and came up with a live CD to
celebrate that. In all those years, HR haven't had a single lineup change —
something you've got to give these guys credit for. The recordings on this
album were made during the Lowlands and Pukkelpop fests. The sound quality is good and
even manages to catch the typical atmosphere of an overheated, crowded
festival tent. There's a lot of interaction with the audience in-between the
songs, pointing out that having fun is the single goal of HR (though some
attempts at humorous remarks mercilessly failed).
One of the more spontaneous
highlights was the totally wasted guy asking to come onstage to sing the
words to Punica, HR's first self-written song ever. The guy in question had
absolutely no clue as to what was going on. It's A Life is a trip through each
of HR's albums. Well-known Dutch songs like Klapvee, Tering Tyfus Takketrut,
and Sjonnie & Anita alternated with better ones like Break The Public
Peace, and Time Is Ticking Away. If you're a fan, you can pretty much guess
which tunes are on this album. The booklet is well taken care of: It has
lots of pictures, trivia, and a short story to every song on the album. HR
have been enjoying themselves for a long time, and it seems there's no
stopping them. Whether you like it or not.
