As far as I know the genre that we know as Big Beat had almost died somewhat of a sudden, quiet death last year (you could almost say "officially", when the pace-setting Wall Of Sound-label announced it to be more dead than polka and that they were going to focus their efforts to their more techno-oriented roster), only to make an attempt at a comeback in this, the age of glossy 2-step with releases by Bentley Rythm Ace, Mekon and of course the imminent return of Fatboy Slim himself later this year which will in fact prove once and for all whether the genre is back off its ass for good or not. As you may well remember back in the day when MJ Cole was probably flipping burgers at a Krusty Burger somewhere, Big Beat was, as they say, the shiznit. It was all so huge that at one point there were even speculations of some DJ fronting Monkees-style for a supersecret set of anonymous producers. These alleged Vengaboys-like practices were never proved nor refuted fully beyond doubt and if you hadn't guessed yet (no 10 points for you!), the guy in question was of course none other than Deejay Punk Roc. Now he's back, "Spoiling It For Everyone" with this follow up to 1998's "Chicken Eye" and if this record would prove anything, it would be that he's spoiling it more for himself (and ultimately the scene) with a record that is flat, totally uninspired and all filler. This would've sucked even if it were produced and released in '97 because the premises on which the tracks are built on (beats, samples, breaks, hooks) are not innovative, surprising or even nuanced. Instead it's all so-so, lukewarm (reheated is a better word to use in this context), uneventful. There's some rough play there, like the human beatbox in there but Punk Roc actually manages to avoid playing with it, he instead uses it as some kinda badge. "Brooklyn Style", my ass. As for old skool 80s disco and funk replicants like "One More Bump" and "Fat Gold Chain" (chipmunk raps always work)... nice, just because they're very true to form (as in cheesy) and come in handy in case you didn't bring your Zap & Roger records to the party (lose another 10 points). Deejay Punk Roc (or the puppetmasters with their collective arm up his rectum) is the black Moby, expect this gutless tripe to flood fashion runways and cheap cola commercials very soon. Time for Mr. Cook to come with the remedy... if he has it.
