This is the second album this German darkwave band releases through a major label. Deine Lakaien first
album dates back to 1986. After some years of silence
the band returned in the early nineties and has since
then established themselves as one of the leading acts
in the gothic / darkwave scene. They were the first
gothic band from the second generation (early
nineties) that signed to a major record label. Even
now they are only followed by Covenant (Swedish
electro act) who signed to a Sony subsidiary recently.
Deine Lakaien is slimmed down to its original line up with
only Alexander Veljanov and Ernst Horn. Horn also
released recently the first album of his new project
Helium Vola. On certain tracks of this Deine Lakaien
album the influence of this side project is evident.
According to the liner notes the medieval sounding
'Kiss' is taken from the Helium Vola sessions. This
track is a bit more electronic that most songs from that project, but the instrumentation and rhythms betray its
origin. There is also a guest appearance of Helium
Vola singer Sabine Lutzenberger on 'Hands White (Mane
Bianchi)'. Besides that 'Generators', the first
single, has a Helium Vola feel to it with its medieval rhythm.
Except for those influences this record is anything you could expect
from a new Deine Lakaien album. There are lots of
beautiful quiet songs and ballads on it and as always
one or two loud songs, which are also as always, the weakest tracks of the record. The songs are
built around electronic sounds and accompanied by
acoustic instruments like violin, cello and guitar and of course Veljanov's instantly recognizable voice.
Tracks like 'Wunderbar', 'Where You Are' and
'Fleeting' prove that Deine Lakaien is (still) a band
that is capable of writing excellent music.
'White Lies' is an fine album with lots of nice quiet
songs on it. There is nothing really shocking or new
to this record, but there is also nothing to complain
about. Deine Lakaien proves that you don't have to be
a sell out when you sign to a major
label as a gothic band. You just need to have the musical craftsmanship
to keep producing good albums. And this band does.
