Traffic vol 2 from the German Combination Records is a collection of mostly downtempo tracks trying to mix up styles, but what comes out are mainly rather boring spheric beats and bleeps. Most of the tracks have some good ideas and sounds, but nothing really grabs your attention. Only 3 out of 12 tracks on the album have something really nice about them and two of those are (partly) made by drum'n'bass producer Kabuki. His Tempest track was first released on the Italian label Head To Toe, an Irma Records sublabel dedicated to exciting explorations into broken beats, breaks and latin vibes. Tempest is a drum'n'bass/broken beat hybrid with a house tempo, dark bass, great keys and a funky off-beat drumtrack. The other track Spiderman is a collaboration by Kabuki and Pentagon from Japan. The outcome is a sparse, minimal and very spacious drum'n'bass track. The third OK track on this compilation is Chicken Sandwich by Fellman & Louise, a funky, bouncy groove with a cool vocal sample. So with a score of 3 out of 12, what you should do is skip this compilation and look out for stuff by Kabuki, Fellmann & Louise or the excellent Head To Toe label.
